Cereal-sly Delicious
A full house of family members in the time of Covid-19 looks different for everyone. At the base of my adventure, there is a newness I am experiencing that is akin to being an event manager for a Hotel California-esque party from morning to night, and dealing with physically shifting space for various uses throughout the day for everyone.
The act of trying to carve out moments for myself within these now always occupied spaces can be hard. Especially when I'm always trying to make sure everyone else is comfortable and has everything they need to be set up for success. But in an act of rebellion and possibly exhaustion, I didn't do my usual tango of mental arguing of necessity when I saw Salt & Straw had cereal flavored ice cream pints for delivery on Door Dash. I just knew at that moment that I had to have some and I was going to eat some in the quietest corner I could find.
I choose two flavors from Salt & Straws Cereal-sly Delicious release. I put one pint of Snap 'N Crackle Marshmallow Treats and one pint of Pots of Gold and Rainbows (Yes! Both marshmallows flavored yums) in my cart. The two options that gave me a hint of nostalgia as I gave a glance to their flavor notes. Then I tossed in a big tip for delivery and pressed purchase.
Because West Seattle has a bridge out of commission - all deliveries from mainland Seattle take twice as long. I felt I was gambling a bit with my first ice cream restaurant delivery purchase vs estimated travel time, but trusted the cooler Seattle day to be on my side.
The ice cream arrived and I played the delivery as nonchalantly as possible, not trying to draw attention from my family to my treasures, getting them quickly to the room with our chest freezer for inspection and passing the kitchen to grab a spoon on the way. This was a pretty easy task as everyone was either consumed with streaming or games.
I opened Snap 'N Crackle Marshmallow Treats first, the smell of cinnamon wafted up and I could see the crisp bits and marshmallow swirls lifted when I took off the top from the melty pint. It tasted amazing, and while reminiscent of the marshmallows treats of childhood, it was more grown up with a slightly cinnamon almost horchata like taste from the graham ice cream base. Taking a few bites in my storage room, I was wondering why I've never had horchata rice krispy treats when so much of the flavor profile is shared.
I then set my sights on the pint of Pots of Gold and Rainbows. Lucky Charms were (and still are) my most favorite indulgent cereal that should probably be classified as a dessert. They are the gateway into my love of marshmallows - even though cereal marshmallows are a harder non-squishy version of marshmallows that make you wonder if they deserve that classification at all. I wondered if the cold of the ice cream was going to make the marshmallows in the mix - a "texture situation" that I was going to regret. But a few bites in and much to my excitement I was wondering which pint of ice cream I loved more. Pots of Gold and Rainbows was a perfect replica of a bowl of cereal. The cereal milk ice cream and the marshmallows put a huge smile on my face, their texture was perfect and not crumbly. They just seemed to match the ice cream's fluid state so well. I was so excited in fact, that I marched out of the storage room with pints in hand to have the husband try them too. That moment of happiness alone, just enjoying a few bites of ice cream was a little vacation in the day, it was too good not to share.

Pots of Gold and Rainbows
Itโs baaaaaack. For this legendary technicolor favorite, we hand-sort the luck from the charms, steeping the whole-grain cereal in cream for that bottom-of-the-bowl sweetened milk before stirring in mountains of rainbow โmallows.
