No-fly Cone
Not shown: a cone chipping under the weight of the scoop
As you’ve probably noticed, I usually get my ice cream served up in a cone. The idea of eating the ice cream vehicle is really pleasing to me, but more than that, I like having some texture in my ice cream. The silky-smooth creaminess feels nice, but that crisp crunch is so satisfying. I prefer a sugar cone with hard ice cream, a cake cone with soft serve, and if it’s cold out and I’m feeling decadent, a fresh waffle cone with the inside coated with hot fudge.
I had a phone date with a friend today, and decided to go on a walk through the park; and while I was out and about, figured I might as well pick up a scoop.
A couple weeks ago, a friend sent me a NYC soft serve map that listed Uncle Louie G, a place just west of Prospect Park, and so I rolled up, sweating through my shirt.
You may have noticed that the above scoop is not, in fact, soft serve. It was on the menu, but when I asked about flavors was informed that they do not, in fact, have soft serve right now. Bummer! I was looking forward to it.
It felt like a chocolatey day, so I ordered the chocolate fudge brownie ice cream, and it tasted just fine — it wasn’t spectacular, but it was a perfectly good scoop of ice cream. The brownie bits were pretty well churned. However, the cone was already splintered before it was handed to me; and the weight of the ice cream seemed to reduce the structural integrity even more. However, that wasn’t even the biggest problem! The cone was stale and had a weird after-taste to it, like they’d used some old lemon zest. A double chocolate scoop is pretty intensely sweet and, in my opinion, definitely needs a good cone to juxtapose the sweetness, and so this was a fairly mediocre experience unfortunately.
