Sundaes on Sunday
Whew! It has really been a month, huh! The west coast has been on fire, there have been all kinds of storms everywhere, American democracy is in crisis, we’re still in pandemic-mode, my cat got extremely sick (not covid, but maybe cancer), and it’s chilly out. Today’s the autumnal equinox, so there’s no denying that fall has full-on arrived. But thankfully, I think ice cream is better in cold months — you don’t have to rush to finish it before it melts all over your fingers, and a throat full of dairy is much more tolerable when it’s cool out.
Trying to squeeze out every last ounce of warmth and sunshine I can get — and trying not to turn into a useless puddle of flesh, I’ve been trying to bike more. A week ago, Rebecca and I made a little journey out to Red Hook to try Dolce. Brooklyn, a gelato place that has been on my radar for awhile. Red Hook is a little tricky to get to, but we made it on one piece, where we discovered this charming menu.
A mini sundae with a macaron! OMG. I got their Serious Chocolate gelato with a raspberry macaron and cookie crumbles. The whole thing was, surprisingly enough, not too enormous. (Too much ice cream makes me feel sick! I often ask for less than a single scoop.)
It was very good, although to my great surprise, I think I don’t really care for plain chocolate as a flavor anymore; I need something chunky in the mix to make it a little more interesting.
A week later, I was in the same neighborhood after having gone on a little bike tour of Governor’s Island, and decided to stop by again to try the sweet corn gelato I’d passed on the first go-around. Unfortunately, in the intervening week, sweet corn had gone out of season! Stupid fall.
I thought I would forever be sad about it, but the option that had been added in its place, banana, was actually perfect. The flavor was mellow and honestly kind of soothing, and with a crunchy sugar cone, it was exactly what I needed after a 15 mile bike ride.
5 spoons and a heavy heart as we swing into fall.
